Editorial Policy

How We Evaluate,
Select, and Publish

Our editorial methodology is the backbone of every decision we make. We publish it openly because transparency is not optional — it is the entire point.

What Makes a Game Worth Featuring

Our evaluation process begins with a set of firm criteria. No game makes it onto the Umber Krakatoa platform without passing all of them. These are not guidelines — they are thresholds.

Genuinely Free

The game must be playable in full without any financial transaction. No paywalled chapters, no mandatory subscriptions, no functional pay-to-win mechanics.

Browser-Native

Must run in a modern browser without downloads, plugins, or proprietary runtimes. HTML5 and WebGL are our preferred technical stacks.

No Gambling Mechanics

Any loot-box system, odds-based reward, or mechanic that simulates wagering — even with virtual currency — immediately disqualifies a game from consideration.

Craft & Design Quality

We look for intentional design decisions: readable UI, accessible controls, a coherent aesthetic, and gameplay that respects the player's intelligence.

Appropriate for 18+ Adults

Content should be suited to mature audiences in terms of complexity and theme. We are not a children's platform; we are also not gratuitously violent or offensive.

Developer Attribution

We must be able to clearly identify and credit the developer. Anonymous submissions without verifiable provenance are not considered.

From Discovery to Publication: Six Steps

Discovery & Initial Assessment

Games come to our attention through team members' own browsing, community submissions via email, and periodic sweeps of established browser-gaming directories. Each game receives an initial pass by one team member who checks the basic criteria: free, browser-native, no gambling mechanics. Games that fail any criterion are set aside with a brief note explaining why.

Extended Play Testing

Games that clear the initial assessment enter a play-testing phase. At least two team members independently play the game for a minimum of two hours across separate sessions. We look for hidden paywalls that appear later in the game, compulsion loops, dark patterns in notifications or UI, and whether the experience holds up on both desktop and mobile browsers.

Developer Verification & Attribution

Before publication, we verify the identity of the developer or studio through publicly available information — websites, social profiles, or direct contact. We check that the game is not infringing on another party's intellectual property. For in-house titles (our own studio), this step covers our internal IP documentation.

Editorial Write-Up

A staff writer drafts a game description that is honest, specific, and written for an adult audience. We do not use superlatives without evidence. We do not claim a game is "the best" unless we can defend that claim. We identify the genre, the intended experience, and any relevant caveats. The write-up is reviewed by a second editor before publication.

Legal & Compliance Review

Every piece of content published on Umber Krakatoa passes a final check against our compliance requirements: no gambling language, no misleading prize claims, no deceptive "free" labelling, correct age gating, clear developer attribution, and no intellectual property red flags. This step is non-negotiable regardless of how promising the game appears.

Publication & Ongoing Monitoring

Published games are reviewed periodically — at a minimum, once per quarter — to ensure conditions have not changed. If a previously free game introduces paywalls, gambling mechanics, or other disqualifying features, it is removed from the platform promptly. We do not grandfather in games that change for the worse.
