Who We Are and
Why We Play for Free
Umber Krakatoa is an independent editorial team in Austin, Texas, building the gaming hub we always wanted — one that treats free entertainment as a value, not a loophole.
A Small Team With a Big Conviction
We are Umber Krakatoa — a handful of writers, developers, and game enthusiasts who share one foundational belief: excellent entertainment games should be accessible to everyone, not just those willing to spend money to reach the good parts.
Our team came together in Austin, Texas, in 2024, drawn by a shared frustration with free-to-play gaming spaces that were, in practice, neither free nor playful. Paywalls disguised as tutorials. Loot boxes dressed as features. Compulsion loops masquerading as fun.
So we built the alternative: a curated hub where the editorial voice is loud, the games are genuinely free, and the reader's time is treated as the most valuable resource in the room.
"A great game earns your attention. It doesn't buy it."
Umber Krakatoa is named after the volcano — a force of nature that is awe-inspiring, completely free to observe, and doesn't ask for your credit card details.
Free, Transparent, Entertainment-Only
What "Free" Actually Means Here
At Umber Krakatoa, free means free. You will never reach a point mid-game where a paywall appears. You will never be prompted to buy a "starter pack" or unlock a mechanic with real money. Our featured game — 25 Points: Hit the Top — is developed and maintained by our in-house studio with no player spending model attached.
Entertainment Only — No Financial Mechanics
We are an entertainment platform, not a gambling or wagering service. No money changes hands on this site, ever. There are no simulated casinos, no odds-based systems that mimic gambling mechanics, no "coins" that can be exchanged for real value. Our achievement system (the Passport Stamps) is a decorative feature stored in your own browser — it has no monetary value and cannot be redeemed.
Transparency as a Design Principle
We publish our editorial methodology openly. We credit all developers. We disclose our traffic sources. We do not use dark patterns in our interface design. Every link on this site that navigates away is clearly labelled with its destination. Our cookie banner gives equal weight to "Accept" and "Reject" — because we believe choice should be a genuine option.
Who It Is For
Umber Krakatoa is for adults aged 18 and older who want high-quality browser gaming without the noise. People who appreciate craft, who have played enough compulsion-loop games to know the difference, and who enjoy entertainment that respects their time. Our editorial voice is warm, direct, and assumes you are intelligent.
Editorial Independence
Our game selections and reviews are never influenced by developers or advertisers. If we feature a game, it is because we believe in it — not because someone paid for placement.
Total Cost Honesty
Every game listed as free is free in full, not just the first five minutes. We will always disclose if content conditions change.
Privacy by Default
We collect only what you voluntarily give us through forms. We do not track you across the web, sell your data, or profile you for advertising. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Accessibility as Standard
Every page on this site is built to be navigable by keyboard and compatible with screen readers. We follow WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines as our baseline.
